Using Noteflight: Tips, All-time Practices, and Cool Features Y'all Might Not Know About

Dear Noteflighters (or Notepilots, as some of you prefer to be called),

In our travels on the forums, on our user support line, and in discussions with composers, students, and teachers (including me, working with my students equally my alter-ego the composition teacher), we hear a lot of things about Noteflight: mostly tales of joy and musicality, a few tales of puzzlement (which we assist resolve right away!), and so e'er those tales of… "oh hey! I didn't know Noteflight could do that!"

Our User Guide gives the full moving picture, but we desire to share a few highlights and "all-time practices", tips from our users, things that "but work", and cool tricks y'all might not know yet.

Tie vs Slur

Sharing Your Scores

Noteflight is a great annotation editor, and our heart and soul is in helping you to create music. But Noteflight's sharing features make it something more: the ability to instantly share, collaborate, comment, follow, and favorite make Noteflight a customs. Each score, like a Google Drive document or Youtube video, is a unique web folio with an address on the internet which you, as owner and creator of that score/web page, can control access to. The default setting keeps it private, visible only to y'all, just equally it would be if information technology were a file on your hard drive.

Merely just like a Youtube video, if y'all desire to transport your score to a friend for feedback — or for them to add the brass section equally role of a collaboration, perhaps — simply copy-paste the link into an email, web log, even a text message, and they tin open it instantly…

IF y'all have set the sharing options to let them see it. That'south why the Sharing Console is then important: for your colleagues, students, and friends to come across your score, you must SHARE your score. The default is set to individual, so this doesn't happen automatically.

Save your score as a PDF

You can do this in the Score palette, under Impress. But the easiest way is in the same palette under Export then cull the PDF option.

Teachers! The Sites menu

If you are the administrator of a Noteflight Larn site, go along in listen the left panel that opens up when yous click the Noteflight icon on the upper left. This is where you can switch betwixt your scores on our public site at www.noteflight.com and your individual school site(s), which have a different web address:

Other good things to know

Change role names right in the margin!
Yup: just double click the part proper noun, and then rewrite it as yous come across fit. If you're writing for an instrument nosotros don't accept yet, you can use an instrument we do have, then put the correct name in for the player to read. Or if your friend Julia is playing the clarinet part, you can put her name right in there adjacent to the clarinet staff!

How do rests work in Noteflight?
In Noteflight, a rest occurs when there is no annotation — there can't be a gap in the bar. And then if you select a notation and hit Delete/Backspace, Noteflight automatically fills in a residuum of the same value.

Starting time and Second endings
In the Echo palette you will so meet the "get-go ending" symbol, with a 1 and a line following it.

To create the 2nd ending, add another first ending and double click the "ane" to get the blinking cursor, then supercede it with a "2".

You tin apply an "incoming necktie" to the first note in the second ending. This symbol is on the Duration palette:

Hide Time Signatures or Bar Lines

Sometimes for a school do, or Gregorian chant, or the like, y'all don't want to show the time signature and bar lines. You can hide them!

Click the fourth dimension signature to open the "change time signatures" box. Hide Cautionary Time Signatures and Cardinal Signatures

Import scores from other notation programs

Have a score yous created elsewhere, and y'all desire to work with it in Noteflight? Piece of cake!

1. Export as XML (not MXL) from the other program, and save it to your hard drive.

Lost your Metronome Mark?

Separate one measure between two systems

1. Create two measures in place of the ane y'all want to dissever.

2. Change both time signatures so that together they add up to the original time signature; for case if the music is in 4/iv time and you desire to split a measure out into 3 beats plus i vanquish, use 3/four and i/iv…
…BUT before you close the time signature dialog each time, choose "hidden".

three. Select the bar line after the "3/4" bar and hit return/enter to create a system/line break.
